What does it takes to be a translator?

Assalamualaikum everyone,

It has been a while for me to think for a new topic to be brought up. I guess someone has the dream to be like me - a freelance translator, working from home. Ok, I would like to list down some attributes/characters to be a translator :
1. you've to have a BIG PASSION in translating things - anxious to go through the reading materials and understand them to your best level, flips the dictionaries/ thesaurus, asking people who are expert in the area (sometimes, we need to get clear picture/ explanation about certain phrases/ sentences from other party e.g: someone who are involved in certain area such as engineers (for engineering/ technical fields), doctors (medical industry) etc.)
2. occupy yourself with professional certificate - you need to attend certain course and ensure that you passed the examination in order to become a certified translator. Although it's not compulsory, but your certification helps you in gaining good prospect from the potential clients. Try to check out http://www.itnm.com.my/ to browse the scheduled courses.
3. be creative to MARKET yourself - once you get the certification, it's time for you to spread your wings in this industry. You might choose manual methods such as advertisement in printed materials, namecard/ businesscard, flyers etc. OR easier way such emails, internet etc.
4. never giving up to learn more as languages are dynamic - certain word changes through time.
5. for a beginner, it's best to work in a teamwork - gathers with your friends to exchange information and opinion. You might also need them to recheck your translation works or complete the job (especially when the clients want them urgently!)

Happy Translating!

Kadar perkhidmatan

Di sini, saya sertakan kadar standard perkhidmatan saya. Namun, kadar masih boleh dirunding. ;-) Jangan segan-segan, hubungilah saya.
A) Terjemahan

1) Teks perubatan, sains & teknologi, teknikal (kejuruteraan, pembinaan, IT & sains komputer), komunikasi massa , ekonomi, perakaunan, perundangan, sastera kreatif (buku cerita, puisi dsb.) = RM 0.15/ perkataan

2) Teks pengurusan/ pentadbiran, perniagaan/ pemasaran = RM 0.10/ perkataan

3) Teks umum = RM 0.06/ perkataan

B) Proofread (termasuk semakan ejaan, tatabahasa dan kesesuaian perkataan + suntingan) = 50% daripada kadar terjemahan perkataan.
Cthnya : sekiranya terjemahan dan proofread teks perubatan, maka = (A) + (B) iaitu RM 0.15+(50% {0.15}) = RM 0.15 + RM 0.075
= RM 0.225 ~ RM 0.23/ perkataan
